This week, I saw a quote from Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Robert Barron that was very powerful.

Let me start with the end of his quote and work backwards.

“And if we don’t do it, it’s not going to get done.”

How’s that for a call to action?

Here is the entirety of Bishop Barron’s quote, including that last line:

“We need prophets, especially now.

We need people who speak the word of God:

Yes, in the public place;

Yes, in the media;

Yes, in the universities;

Yes, in the places where the culture is formed.

And if we don’t do it, it’s not going to get done.”

True, in his quote, Bishop Barron likely means people evangelizing our culture by using spoken words to talk about Christianity.

But I think “…speak the word of God…” can be applied more broadly than words only.

Of course, using words to speak to others about God has its place.

But we also “speak” about God with our actions.

And perhaps our actions – what we do – “speak” about God to others more loudly than our words do.

As the 19th century philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, said, “What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.”

As I proposed in a recent update, Jesus gives a clear guide for what loving Him dearly looks like, revealing to us the primacy of “doing”:

“And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’” Matthew 25:40

Through OAASYS, every day, what you can do for women facing unexpected pregnancies will “speak so loudly” to others about how God is working through you, that it can powerfully evangelize the culture around you – your family, your friends, your colleagues.

When you do that, although you may not consider yourself a prophet in word, you most certainly are a prophet in deed.

Together, we remember that, as Bishop Barron said, “…if we don’t do it, it’s not going to get done.”
